Education & Certification
Trains and tests the people who can be trusted with other people’s money.

Its role in the system
The system that prepares the people who can be trusted with other people's money. Regulators and employers cannot examine every specialist in person, so they rely on standardised exams, certifications and codes of ethics. These set a common professional language across countries and filter out those who have no right to advise, audit or sign off.
Functions
- Basic education — universities and business schools (INSEAD, LBS, Wharton, HEC) give the foundation in economics, accounting and finance; the MBA is for managers.
- Professional certifications — exams plus verified experience and a code of ethics: CFA (investment), ACCA / CPA / CIMA (accounting, audit), FRM / PRM (risk), CAMS (AML), CIA (internal audit).
- Regulatory qualifications — mandatory admission to the job: 🇺🇸 FINRA exams (SIE, Series 7), 🇬🇧 the minimum qualification for financial advisers, 🇪🇺 MiFID II requirements for staff knowledge, 🇪🇺 the ECB's fit-and-proper assessment of bank directors.
- Continuing professional development (CPD) — annual learning without which the status is lost; it keeps knowledge in step with new standards.
- Ethics and disciplinary control — associations can strip a person of their status for a breach; this is the profession's reputational insurance.
- Financial literacy — programmes run by central banks, regulators and non-governmental organisations for people without a financial education.
What makes it special
- Who earns: non-profit professional associations (CFA Institute, ACCA, GARP, IIA) live on exam and membership fees; business schools on tuition and corporate programmes; alongside them sit commercial exam-preparation providers.
- A certificate is not a licence, and after crises the bar goes up: CFA or FRM are voluntary marks of quality from private associations. The right to work — to sign an audit opinion, to advise retail clients, to run a bank — is granted by the regulator, often through its own examination or an approval of the person. After 2008 regulators tightened requirements for people who deal with clients (🇬🇧 the RDR reform, 🇪🇺 MiFID II: a qualification plus at least six months of experience, or work under supervision).
- A global language, with ethics inside the exam: the CFA began in the 🇺🇸 (first exam in 1963) and ACCA in the 🇬🇧, but both became international; that is why analysts in Frankfurt and Singapore study the same curriculum and understand DCF or IFRS 9 in the same way. Both programmes always include ethical standards, and breaching the code can cost you the designation.
- 🇨🇳 China: the state stands at the entrance to the profession: the right to sign an audit opinion comes from the national CPA examination run by the Chinese Institute of Certified Public Accountants (CICPA), while work at a brokerage is opened by the qualification examination of the Securities Association of China — a self-regulatory body operating under the CSRC.
- 🇯🇵 Japan: one of the longest routes into the profession: CPA status takes an examination in Japanese, at least two years of practice in accounting or auditing, a three-year professional programme run by the JFAEL foundation, and a final assessment and registration with JICPA. Selling securities requires passing the JSDA sales representative examination — Class 1 (derivatives and margin transactions) or Class 2 (basic products) — and being registered as a representative of a member firm.
Why it matters
When training is a formality, the system ends up with auditors who do not see the risks and advisers who sell unsuitable products. Trust in certificates rests on nothing but the honesty of the exams and real disciplinary control.
The SEC fined EY 100 million dollars — a record for an audit firm: a significant number of auditors had cheated on the ethics section of the CPA exam and in continuing education courses, and the firm misled the regulator about it. If even the "honesty exam" is faked, trust in the reports that get signed is in question.
The British regulator raised the minimum qualification for retail financial advisers and barred them from taking commission from product providers. In the FCA's review, advisers became less likely to recommend products with higher charges — an example of how qualification and conflict-of-interest requirements change market behaviour.

- Anti-Money LaunderingAnti-Money Laundering keeps Education & Certification busy: the CAMS credential needs 60 credits and renewal every three years, and AML laws require the responsible officer to be trained soon after appointment and refreshed at fixed intervals.
- Audit & AssuranceEducation & Certification underpins Audit & Assurance — the profession rests on ACCA, CPA, CIA and national auditor qualifications.
- Banking & Credit InstitutionsEducation & Certification supplies Banking & Credit Institutions with FRM, CAMS and ACI holders for risk, compliance and treasury, plus the regulator's fit-and-proper tests for senior managers.
- Consulting & AdvisoryEducation & Certification provides the common entry ticket to Consulting & Advisory and transaction services: an MBA or a professional certification.
- Corporations & Corporate FinanceAccounting and management finance certifications from Education & Certification (ACCA, CIMA, CPA) are the professional standard inside Corporations & Corporate Finance and one pillar of trust in their reporting.
- Financial Media & DataEducation & Certification borrows the reach of Financial Media & Data: courses such as Bloomberg Market Concepts, explanatory outlets and podcasts lower the entry barrier for newcomers.
- Households & IndividualsEducation & Certification serves Households & Individuals through financial literacy programmes and through adviser qualifications that guard against unsuitable products.
- InsuranceInsurance rests on actuarial qualification: exams from professional institutes plus recognition by the regulator, granted through Education & Certification, give the right to judge reserves and pricing.
- Investment & Pension FundsEducation & Certification sets the bar for Investment & Pension Funds: the CFA for analysts and portfolio managers, the CIPM for performance measurement.
- Regulation & SupervisionEducation & Certification is shaped by Regulation & Supervision, which sets the compulsory qualifications and recognises professional certificates.
- Retail accessRetail access is the area where Education & Certification is compulsory: regulators demand exams and proven experience from anyone selling investment products to the public.
